John M. Trainor, 85, of North Grafton

Trainor, of North Grafton, formerly of Worcester, passed away Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at the Rose Monahan Hospice Residence, surrounded by his loving family, just three days before his 86th birthday. His loving wife of 43 years, M. Barbara (Farley) Trainor, predeceased him in 2003.John is survived by his three sons, John M. Trainor II and his wife Kristine of Worcester, Charles F. Trainor and his wife Kathleen of Sutton, and Lawrence E. Trainor and his fiancée Sandra Gordon of North Grafton; a brother, Eugene Trainor of Boxborough; eight grandchildren; a great-grandson; and nieces and nephews.John was born in Batavia, N.Y., son of the late, Eugene F. and Ruth E. (Messinger) Trainor. Moving to Worcester as a young child, the city had been his hometown, and he lived here for many years before moving to North Grafton two years ago. He served his nation proudly in the United States Army.He graduated from Saint John’s High School and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the College of The Holy Cross. He furthered his education at Boston College where he earned a Master’s Degree in Social Work.He worked as a Social Worker for many years with the Department of Social Services, before retiring in 1989. His love of social work started while working with his mother Ruth at Friendly House.He had been a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Worcester, and served as a Eucharistic Minister there for many years. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus and enjoyed fishing, reading, his time at the lake and bee keeping.  His love of the outdoors can be traced back to when he and his brother became the first two members of the Nature Training Center in West Boylston.Calling Hours will be held Tuesday, April 17, from 4-7 p.m., in MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St., Worcester. His funeral will be Wednesday, April 18, at 10:30 a.m., in Saint Mark Church, 356 Boston Rd., Sutton.  Interment will be held privately at Saint John’s Cemetery of Worcester.In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Ros...
